DOGS ON CALL is a 501c3 non-profit organization that trains Therapy Dogs in Alabama. Our Therapy Dog teams provide comfort to those living with disabilities, suffering trauma or stress, at-risk, or living in rehabilitation centers and hospitals, retirement, nursing and assisted living communities, and youth detention centers.

DOGS ON CALL is a program of Easter Seals Alabama and is a recognized Therapy Dog certifying organization of the American Kennel Club (AKC).

Our History

DOC was founded in 2008 by Frances McGowin and became associated with Easterseals Alabama a few years later. She served as the director of Dogs On Call and K-9s 4 Kids Service Dogs for seven years until she founded Service Dogs Alabama and separated from Easter Seals in 2015.

Presently, DOC has an Advisory Committee of its members overseeing activities and is under the umbrella of Easterseals Alabama.

An estimated 175 dogs and owners have been certified as DOC Therapy Teams over the last 10 years. It is a fluid organization as dogs retire and people move but DOC has maintained a yearly membership of approximately 50 teams.

2018 marks the 10th anniversary of Dogs On Call providing pet therapy service in the River Region.

Our Mission & Philosophy

More than a Therapy Dog program, DOGS ON CALL (DOC) is a volunteer-driven Community Service Organization. Our mission is to provide the compassion and assistance that only a trained therapy dog can give.

A Therapy Dog is trained to provide affection and comfort to people in hospitals, retirement homes, nursing homes, schools, hospices, disaster areas, and to people with learning difficulties.
